Just spent the afternoon running around looking for STOUT for two recipes. I’ve got all the other ingredients, but it’s the STOUT I’m missing! I’m tempted to just use any kind of beer I can get here. I can get it at the beer distributor, for $36 a case! What would I do with a case of stout? Serves me right for wanting to try unusual food while living in the boondocks of PA.

This may be too late but you can use Guinness which I think is common there in the US.
hay salamat cecile! i was thinking na nga of using guinness kasi meron sa store, but i had never had stout before so hindi ko alam kung similar or not, but the shop owner (who i just assumed was a beer connoisseur — but now i realize i may be totally wrong) — said there really isn’t a good substitute for stout. kainis! i’ll run out today and get some. thanks so much for the tip — i should have known to ask you first!
