So tell me why we aren’t doing this here.
Poll says 80% of US parents favor abstinence education.
A Zogby poll, commissioned by the National Abstinence Education Association (NAEA), found that 80% of parent would prefer the abstinence approach rather than a focus on condom use. The vast majority (93%) want their children informed that condoms are not always effective, and 83% want their children to refrain from sexual activity before marriage.
How many of this 80% will be vocal enough to make a difference in what is taught and how children are taught at our schools? Considering how hands-on most parents are these days, this might become just another statistic that’s ignored.
What parents thought just six years ago.
A recent poll found that 70% of Americans oppose the provision of federal funds for abstinence-only curricula that prohibit teaching about the use of condoms and contraception for the prevention of unintended pregnancy and HIV/STD infection (Advocates for Youth, 1999)
Dare we hope that the tide has turned?
A more thorough treatment of the sex-ed issue, from Dr. Jennifer Roback Morse. [Wow, her reading list is mind-boggling. I can’t even finish the 4 that I’m reading, it’s been months!]
And please pray for this mom who posts about her thoughts about the VA shooting, and her personal heartbreak over her son’s schizophrenia. I don’t know what advice to give her (maybe some of you do?) but the stats she cites are scary. We need to triple, quadruple, quintuple our prayers for our children.
A great reminder of what we are called to do. I’ve put the book on my wish list.
And a debate on Christianity, the link to which I found at Amy Welborn’s blog. At first I was thinking this may be great discussion for my teen esp., but most Atheists I’ve met/read/heard about aren’t about to change their belief, or rather, non-belief — so IMHO, though we are called to spread the Good News, some of us (moms in particular) have higher things on the priority list — though when called to defend/explain the faith we certainly should do so. I think for now we’ll focus on getting said teen prepared, IYKWIM. She can deal with that stuff later. As they say, “A man convinced against his will is of the same opinion still.” But I’m praying for Doug Wilson to get through to him:).
