SMASH stands for Salmon, Mackerel, Anchovies, Sardines, and Herring. These five fish are highly recommend for their Omega-3 content.
But besides being healthy, there are other benefits:
- They’re quite cheap compared to other protein sources with the exception of beans
- They’re good for stocking up, so do that when they go on sale
- There are so many kinds, from different countries, that it’s fun to try them out. (I’m reviewing several on this post, and might do another post like this come Lent.
- They’re FISH, so nice to keep on hand for Fish Fridays or Meatless Fridays or Fridays in Lent or whenever it is you choose to go meatless.
- I don’t know about you, but we grew up eating canned fish, so they’re super-yummy in my opinion.
Wild Planet Wild White Anchovies in Extra Virgin Olive Oil
Got this on a whim, since we’ve liked Wild Planet products before.
RügenFisch Smoked Herring Fillets in Vegetable Oil
Good stuff! a bit on the salty side.
RügenFisch Cod Liver Bits, 3.9-Ounce
Another whim. Just curious to see if this was actually palatable and something we could eat on a regular basis, instead of taking cod liver oil capsules, which we stopped doing because it was just BLEEEEECH. I hear the lemon flavored ones are not too bad, but would rather not unless I absolutely have to.
Okay. Tried it finally after putting it off for a few days. I was scared I might not like it, but YUM. It’s kinda like a cross between liver pate and sardines. AND it’s so good smeared on toasted baguette slices. I had made a garlic-red-pepper-olive oil dip for my bread, and thought it would be a good idea to combine the two. DOUBLE YUMMY. Will definitely buy this again. Although now I’m curious if the King Oscar cod liver might be yummier.
RügenFisch Mackerel Fillets in Tomato Sauce, 7.05 Ounce
Hubby and I really liked this one. It reminded me of sardines/mackerel from my childhood, which the adults in the household loved to eat with pandesal and butter. I never did, until I was an adult and feeling nostalgic. I didn’t love sardines growing up but ate it anyway.
King Oscar Kipper Snacks Finest Imported Fillets of Herring, 3.25 OZ
a little fishier than i would like, but good enough.
Some of the choices here aren’t gluten-free or dairy-free, so just noting that I probably won’t buy them as often as the safe ones.
