Need advice re these corner cabs! Ikea has a limited corner cab selection, and my fixing this issue will be the deal-breaker on whether hubby and GC will let me use Ikea or not:( — any Ikea experts out there, I need your help!
Design pics here.
Thanks!
Stef, I have some big-time change suggestions if you’re open to them. First, I would want the main sink to be in the main work area, probably centered under the window, with the dishwasher next to it. Do you really want to have to drag all of your dishes to the other side of the room after prepping? I would put a tiny sink in your micro/coffeepot area as a sort of beverage sink, where you have the dishwasher planned now. And I would put the ovens where you have the sink planned now, so that you don’t have a tall cab interrupting a run of cabinets. I think the ovens in that corner is an awkward position. Does this make any sense to you?
I don’t think the ovens work in the corner like that. Do you not want to use lazy susans? I understand if you don’t – – I don’t love them either. But if you don’t, I would just put two 12″ or 15″ cabs on either side of the corner. I would want to minimize drawers there.
stef, I don’t think you can do the drawers in the corners like you have them. When you open the drawers, the drawer will hit the drawer/door handle of the cab perpendicular to it. You really need a door, I think. Although as I’m typing this, I realize I don’t know what a normal corner cabinet has (I don’t have any). Still, I don’t think you can have drawers there without banging handles. However, I don’t see that using non-Ikea cabs makes a difference. What is the layout the GC is proposing with his “standard” cabs? Is there a particular reason that layout, whatever it is, can’t be done with Ikea? Ikea’s sizes really are pretty “standard”, actually.
Unless you add a filler in between the drawer stack and the corner? Move the drawers out an inch or two, enough to clear the other handles when they open?
Paige and quirk, thanks so much!
Are you talking about CB37WB? Can the doors on those be changed to go the other way too? I thought it could only be used on a corner where the door opens from the left. If the doors can go either way those would be perfect here then.
Paige, I did agonize about that — this was the best I could come up with, and that’s why I posted, to get advice from people like you:). Here’s the thing: I want the sink and dishwasher near the instant meal area because that’s where all the essentials go like flatware, dishes, bowls, cups, etc. I had originally planned for an island (which is what I have in my current setup) but there’s no room for one here…. I’m rethinking the design and will post again when I have a solution — thanks!
quirk — i was looking for the regular corner lazy susans found in other manufacturers’ lines, the ones where the lazy susan turns as you push on the door — the door goes inside to reveal the contents then goes back out? i didn’t see anything similar in ikea’s catalog.
